Let us assume this is true. This most directly concerns the segment of the population, over 65, that has government provided medicare, now, and lived through a time when medical care was more accessible and affordable. I suspect the movement of the population away from tobacco also helps.

Now, we are hearing about an obesity epidemic in the population. This represents a decline in the standard of living and could easily lead to the end of the increasing longevity trend. Obesity is being tied to fast foods and packaged foods which replaced fresh foods and home cooking. One could look at the economic pressure globalization has put on most low and middle income families as the reason for the lifestyle changes that have led to high % levels of obesity in the population.
