Guilty plea in beating case
WebPosted Jun 4 2004 09:07 AM NDT

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY — A 21-year-old Natuashish man pleaded guilty to five charges in provincial court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Thursday.

The charges include assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, unlawful confinement and two breaches of probation.

They resulted from an incident involving a 13-year-old girl that began Sunday.

The attack came to light when the girl was found severely beaten outside her mother's house in Natuashish. The weapon involved was an air gun.

The police say the girl is lucky to be alive. She was being treated in hospital in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and was expected to be transferred to hospital in St. John's.

The man has been remanded into custody until a sentencing hearing can be held.

That won't happen until the man gets a psychiatric assessment.

The court has placed a publication ban on the names of the assailant and victim.
