I lived in Alaska for eleven years, but now I live near Spokane Washington. I didn't live in the part where there are polar bears, which is about 1000 miles north of where I lived in Juneau. They are beautiful, indeed. But one would as soon have you for lunch as any old seal so don't get too friendly. Some people climbed the wall at a zoo, got within reach of the resident polar bear, and became lunch. The polar bear was well fed, but apparently never forgets it is a predator.

I have a small bit of polar bear fur attached to a piece of native art, the other component of which is part of a whale's backbone. The fur is very bright owing to the fact that it is hollow. This attribute also makes it possible for the polar bear to swim in icewater as you might in a heated hotel swimming pool.
