I think you are right about cyberspace being something like the invention of the printing press so that rows of monks didn't have to stay in school after prayers to write 100 times "I do not believe the world is round" and send the copies out to the Inquisition.
But, I think the effect will be the biggest thing that has happened not just since the printing press and not just since the invention of the wheel. I'm thinking more impact than all inventions combined since the invention of fire. Not to exaggerate the impact, this is an existential shift greater than the development of sexual reproduction and I'd say equivalent to the original creation of DNA.
If I was given to metaphysical explanations, I'd be looking towards the teleological implications of the laws of the universe which I do not believe had humans as their end-game. I look at my hairy gibbon-like arms and prehensile fingers, sluggish, leaky brain bound up in emotional chimpoid mania and can see that I'm not perfection in the DNA world, let alone what is actually possible in the metaphysical.
Just as our chimpoid ancestors were merely the genetic template for the successful of our ancestors to filter through a million years of challenges, morphed into what we now are, I think we are just the foundation from which the next stage launches.
