CHINA'S BROADBAND GROWTH

A couple of years ago while attending a Fiber to the Home Council meeting I came across several folks who were, at the time, preparing tender offers for what they claimed were 'millions' of lines of last mile solutions in the PacRim region. I thought they were exaggerating some, to say the least, but not knowing the terrain in broadband terms as well as I do now, I merely thought it to be an impressive prospect to mull over, and nothing more.

Recently I came across this article (below) on the BCR online forum that reminded me of those earlier claims at the council meeting, and I came to realize that those folks were not just blowing smoke. Far from it.

Rather notably, Eric Krapf concludes:

"... to the extent that broadband, and specifically DSL, become incubators for other technologies—public voice over IP and high-quality video, for example—those innovations may be more likely to occur anywhere *but* the U.S. There may not be cause for alarm yet, but we ought to be paying attention."
