To that you need to add the military oriented part of the industrial and educational sector. Not only in percentage of people involved but in percent of GNP. Then you get a feel for the size of the problem.

"The defense industry now employs 2.2 million people, about 2% of the civilian workforce. In Fiscal Year 1999 the Department of Defense awarded $118 billion to contractors for goods and services."

In 1999 16% of the GNP was to be allocated to defense spending.

I suspect that that number is much higher today.
