What it comes down to is that Globalstar will get the majority of third world coverage and Iridium will get the businessmen. There is no way that Globalstar can cover the oceans with their little old gateways here and there. We are talking 2/3's of the Earth's surface. There are enormous amounts of space with no islands in sight. Even if they did try to hit some of the more heavily traffic areas who is going to boat out to maintain them? What is going to happen to it the first time a tropical storm comes along? In addition, I believe that Globalstar's plan omits the polar regions. If I have my information correct, due to the shape of the Earth longer flights originating in the Northern Hemisphere pass directly over the north pole. Try explaining to big business that you can give them low cost communications coverage ALMOST everywhere in the world.
As for the gateways, that is merely a connection to ground based systems which obviously have no problem penetrating buildings. However, in remote areas Iridium can go directly to the phone because there are obviously no obstructions.
