RE: "You can't steer a roller coaster."

In the spring of 1982, with the Dow at about 800, I believe it was a Business Week cover story that declared "the stock market is dead." I hope their characterization of the chip industry, "roller coaster", proves just as accurate.

RE: "...companies that had been cautious about buying new tools quickly started to do so."

I am a little disappointed if Splinter actually said this. "Quickly started to do so" should be replaced by "began to significantly increase their orders." "Started" implies no sales prior to the "start" and that creates a misconception. "Quickly" has no meaning, really. When lithography tool orders take 12 to 18 months for delivery, there is no way to understand why or how companies buy "quickly."
