This article is fascinating if you take the view that affirmative action is the only solution and that it must be adhered to at all costs. In this view there can be no discussion, there can be no thought that other points of view need be weighed, that perhaps, the University of Michigan's point system does not need scrutiny.

I recall watching Jack Kemp as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in a news item. He was walking through public housing developments and commenting that no one should be allowed to live in such places and that they should be torn down. People deserve more dignity than that. How did that situation come to be? Who promoted the welfare state as the only civil way to deal with the problem of poverty? Should that argument rule the day and never be challenged?

Is the left infallible and without need for opposition at all?

Please, don't be absurd. This is a two party system for a reason. Both sides are fallible and both sides need a counter.

You again focus completely on the negatives of Reagan and you don't answer my fundamental question.

Why should I listen to you on the left at all if you only attack and never inspire?

I have watched this board for many years and am stunned to find no real political discourse from those on the left. Too often the "discourse" from the left is filled with vitriol and anger. And I thought the left was the compassionate side. The side that cared for all people and wanted to bring hope to those less fortunate.

The left was corrupted by their dominance in politics for the 40 years after FDR and have lost their voice. Reagan caught hold of the movement away from the left to lead to the total control of the government by the right that we see today.

As long as your answers are negative, it will stay that way.

If Kerry cannot find a voice to articulate why he should be President and not just "Bush is evil" the Left remains on the outside looking in.

Give me some reasons to see things your way. Tell me the good that comes from your point of view. FDR did great things that helped the country in the most trying times. The Left has value and you hide it under as sea of anger. Don't make the assumption that everyone should know you are correct in your thinking. If an idea can't stand the scrutiny, then it dies. Let it have the scrutiny.
