"It is a war, he insists, being fought not to protect the security of the United States, but rather to further an imperialistic foreign policy that wants to guarantee control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. "

This is always an interesting topic to me who started out aa an fp realist way back when. The purpose of this war is to build democracy as a deterrent to al quaeda taking over corrupted states and thus protecting oil. The real question to ask is what happens if the democracy attempt falls come apart? We cant force feed democracy if the iraqi people dont make a sincere effort to beat the bad guys. So far the jury is out but just what happens if the pessimists are correct. Should we support reactionary alternatives to guarantte the oil or should we ally with the kurds and perhaps strike a deal with shiaa in the south, work for the best outcome in iran and if necessary just plain take over the Saudi oil fields. UW has assured me (i believe) that it wouldnt be that hard to do, actually much easier than what we are trying to do in iraq. Of course the terrorists may gain control of parts of iraq and all of saudi. Perhaps the should have saudi and lets contain them with then with overwhelming force and without compunction lets us bomb them into the stone age if they continue to mount terror attacks. There i said it. Response of course welcome. mike
