And now Enron has bitten the dust. Guess its conspiracy only took it so far. Too bad we can't say the same for the California legislature, whose stupidity, short-sightedness and hubris was almost equal to Enron's. Yes, I agree that "those who benefit from the money and power that goes with oil dependence truly do not want to be made obsolete." Neither, I am sure, did the coal merchants, the railroad barons and the oil-lamp manufacturers. But the macroeconomic forces inherent in capitalism led to the demise of their power. Like it or not, oil now powers the bulk of the world economy for good economic reasons, not because of a sinister plot. You want to replace it? Make it worth people's while. Will that happen overnight? That magnitude of a change never has. If you want to be free of the "oil cartel" go right ahead and buy a hybrid and power your house with solar cells. Will big government still try to ensure a reliable supply of oil and gas for the vast majority of its citizens? It would be a fool if it didn't.
