"Gut"? Just how much is enough? US military spending vs. the rest of the world:

It is true that we spend far more then anyone else but that data is misleading. China for example spends a lot on its military that isn't part of the military budget. An countries with low military pay combined with the draft are putting resources in to their military even if it doesn't result in a large figure for the amount of money being spent.

I would agree with you that the military was not gutted but it was shrunk. The fact that the need for a huge military had been reduced by the time Clinton came in to office certainly helped reduce the deficit.
