Hawk, I don't think we really disagree. My point is really just that people are almost religious about the greatness and rightness of democracy as saviour of humanity. I think it's really just less bad than the alternatives, as you [and Churchill] say.

Democracy is still a dictatorship, but the dictating is done by an electoral majority rather than a much smaller group.

On a scale of dictatorship from 0 to 10, Saddam would be a 9 and the USA would be a 5 and New Zealand would be a 4. [Open to debate on the position of USA/NZ on the scale I suppose <g> I suspect Helengrad is worse than Washington]

There's a LOT of freedom available lower on the scale, untapped by any country of which I'm aware.
