RFID reader market March 2004

Given the recent bevy of RFID implementation announcements by Wal-Mart, Metro AG, the US Department of Defense and, most recently, Target, VDC - a technology market research and consulting firm - has adjusted the market size and compound annual growth rate (CAGR) originally published in "The Global Markets and Applications for RFID Equipment and Systems, 4th Edition" (2002). Originally estimated to rise by 21% between the years 2003 and 2005, the near-term compound annual growth rate for RFID software and systems is now expected to surpass 37%.

The market for RFID readers in 2005 is expected to be worth $683M compared to the previous estimate of $371M ($272 in 2003) while the RFID software market is seen at $594M compared to the previous estimate of $431M ($301 in 2003). VDC did not significantly revise the near-term estimate for the RFID transponder market.
