As I understand it, the reported unemployment rate is the number of new jobless claims. It reports the percentage of people applying for unemployment benefits. Once the benefits have been exhausted and people are no longer getting unemployment, they are no longer reported.

I'm not so sure that a falling unemployment rate tells us a lot. Many folks have moved to working jobs below their skill level, or are working two "manufacturing jobs" at Burger King. ;^)

Of the 85,200 jobs the state lost between January 2001 and June 2003, the labor market has regained 53,600. It needs about 31,000 more to get back to pre-recession levels, according to the state Employment Security Department.

Another 31,000 to break even...and that does not figure in growth.

We have a long way to go.
