So instead of supporting Israel financially in conflict, we should support Israel financially in pursuing a peace, you're saying.

We are supporting Isreal to the tune of billions of our taxdollars, and have been for years in peace and war. That is a fact. And, apparently it's not going to change soon either. I'm all for recondsidering that support altogether just on the merits of whether we should be doling out our hard earned taxmoney to other countries. It is a rather insane policy. There are states in the U.S. that have $4 Billion budget deficits, why the hell are we sending that money half way around the world to support another country that doesn't wish to live within its means? It's pure politics and influence peddling. Exactly the sort of things Libertarians can't stand about government.

My argument is that since we do have this longstanding policy of subsidizing Isreal, perhaps we could use that money as a carrot to entice the Isrealies to come to a peace settlement with the Palestinians. Then, once it's settled perhaps we could revisit the issue of why were giving them the money at all?

One question does arise in my mind from our exhange on this issue. Do you support the war on terrorism? If the answer is yes, then it certainly is in our interest to put pressure on Isreal to come to a peace agreement with the Palestinians. The ongoing conflict and our support for Isreal hightens our threat of terrorism from radical arabs angry at our Isreal policies and their perceived oppression of the Palestinians. Certainly settling the Palestinian conflict should be an intregal part of the war on terrorism.
