Thoughts on the Drifting Ship called Novell

First:
First off Novell is getting crushed by NT Server the demand for the product is massive an will be unrelenting as all companies with a clue realize you have to trash win 3.1 to gain Year 2000 compliance. When you have to chance to run the same product on the desktop all of your servers (File, Print, Database, Communications - on and on -and on it goes) you have to take advantage of the support synergies - it is common sense. NT is burying Novell. Desktops and Servers will move to NT. 3.X is not Y2K compatible. The release for a Y2k 3.X product is not shipping. Companies are chosing certainty and upgrading to NT now - They will not wait. They have thousands of Netware to convert. The release for 3.X Y2K will be too late to save the market share. The plans are formulated and the execution phase began with NT 4.X release. It will be a slow painful death for Novell.
PC/Server sales will soar due to Y2K. Novell will miss the party.

NDS - A joke - marketing hype - Can't be implemented - It is that simple. Great idea - makes a lot of sense - but impossible to get industry support. Forget about it. That is a marketing tool and nothing more. X.500 will be the standard with LDAP - get real - it is a done deal for crying out loud. Gateways to NDS will be the rule of the day for Novell shops (If any are left). NDS is worth zero revenue.

Financial results will only make the decision to go to NT easier. Who wants to take a chance on this company declining and failing to maintain the required investments to remain competitive and full featured in an investment intensive network computing segment.

No one who wants to be working at the same shop for the next couple of years will risk telling the boss why they didn't go to NT when it was time to upgrade to 4.X and they stuck by Novell. When Novell fades quietly from the scene and they have to then migrate to NT anyway they will be finished. They won't know NT and they wont get a second chance - a New NT guy will replace them. Netware is out of my computing model for good. Too risky - I don't see any investments or commitments to the Intranetware or 3.X. Too bad cause I kind of liked Groupwise - oh well - hello Exchange!

Novell is floudering badly - Where are the spin doctors? All that cash going to waste! What good is it? Use it to save yourselves. Be bold! Go down swinging! They are sooooo Pathetic! What abunch of wimps! Find a partner - you have products - but they are worth so much less as standalone offerings. Bundle and sell!!!!
