Of course, when I had to pay $900 for a washing machine in France because of the VAT, a machine that would have cost maybe $500 in the United States, I did not like it very much, either.

How much is VAT in France? Goods are definitely more expensive in Europe but I think a lot of that can be put down to lack of economies of scale (compared to the US) and a restrictive retailing environment. It was only in 1996 for example that Germany allowed retailers to open on (gasp!) evenings and weekends.
