JF, "By political necessity", you are probably right. This is politics, not religion; what do you expect?

It's hard to have a firm grasp on what a "moderate" is, because all too often, the focus is on pleasing everyone instead of getting real results. At least Clinton was a master at pleasing people, and he didn't have to "invent the Internet" to claim credit for a strong economy. That's where Gore and Kerry are lacking, because Gore redefined himself one too many times, while Kerry is going to suffer for being a self-admitted "flipper."

True moderates, at least on the Republican side, include Colin Powell, John McCain, and Ah-nuld. You can tell these guys are all about results, and at least Ah-nuld has the personality to please people in the process. Maybe McCain as well. And Powell knows himself too well, which is probably why he won't ever seek any elected office.

EDIT - Oh yeah, and Bush tried to pose as a moderate with his "new tone" mentality in Washington, which pretty much meant allowing liberals to advance many of their agendas. Too bad they haven't given Bush any credit for that. I won't go into reasons why not, but suffice to say that the fault lies on both sides of the fence. And saying that is not a cop-out on my part.
