Or... His regime could have rotted from the inside like the Soviet Union. Regimes aren't perpetual motion machines, after all, and they do die out more or less on their own eventually. Or his kids could have been crazy enough to implode. Or he could have done something really stupid and provoked Israel, which would have put him out of business. Knowing what we knew then and even more so knowing what we knew now, there was an excellent chance he could have been contained, at least for quite some time, at least long enough to put together a better implementation package should we need it. It's not that clear cut. If cheap oil became the overriding issue, we could have taken over Venezuela at less cost and risk. And they may even have thrown flowers...<g>
