The history of third party candidates is that their support always tails off. Ultimately, most people want their votes to count for something. I'm sure that if we went back and looked at 2000, the final numbers for Nader and Buchanan were half of what they had been two or three months prior to the election. There is one additional danger for Kerry, however. If public perceptions related to Iraq do not improve, and Kerry is viewed as a "me too" candidate on the issue, the anti-war vote will increase. Nader benefits at Kerry's expense.
