I think the reason for that is based on credit. If people spent evenly, there wouldn't be up and down cycles. Instead people go on spending binges using credit and then savings binges when the money and credit runs out. This in a nutshell is the crux of the business cycle. Without extensive credit, it would tend to even out spending more.
