TOKYO--Japanese-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a book-to-bill ratio of 1.00 for May, up from 0.91 in April, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) on Friday (June 18).

The three-month average of worldwide bookings in May 2004 were 154,284 million Yen (US$1.4 billion), up 10.6 percent from the revised April 2004 level and 89.8 percent above the orders posted in April 2003.

The three-month average of worldwide billings in April 2004 was 154,725 million Yen (US$1.4 billion), up 1 percent above the revised March 2004 level and up 97.8 percent above the April 2003 billings level.

The figures indicate that the Japanese chip-equipment industry continues to slow. In December of 2003, the book-to-bill ratio hit 1.62, but the figure has gradually fallen since that time.

In comparison, North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a book-to-bill ratio of 1.11 in May, down from 1.13 in April, according to the Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International (SEMI) trade group on Thursday (June 17).
