Interesting comment. I've known a few people who carried around rabbit's feet and didn't notice much smell. The cutting off of ears as trophies in war is fairly common and is well documented. At least one US soldier was prosecuted for cutting the ears (and an index finger) off of an "enemy" corpse in Vietnam. The strings of ears were supposedly kept by Hmong in order to be paid for killing Communists, but I haven't found this documented on any US military websites.
