Immigration. % of population foreign born. census.gov

<<I love how foreigners get all confused about American history. Just because we're the superpower they think that they know everything about us. Immigration here has not been at all gradual, but has always come in fits and spurts.> : >

I just love how people say things like that, and: <Yes, I live here, you don't>, as though knowledge has geographic or other barriers and can only be known by direct experience. Book learnin' isn't popular in hillbilly country, but in literate societies, it's quite useful.

Google seems to know more than locals do these days. Knowledge is no longer dependent on being there. Knowledge is extrasomatic these days. Extrasomatic and available everywhere, even in mobile cyberspace with CDMA and 1xEV-DO.

<For that matter, a typical American "white" person has far darker skin color than would be typical for a "white" person from England. The term "blue blood", as used in the US with respect to Americans, means descended from moneyed British ancestors. The implication is that the skin is so light in color that the veins are very easily seen. Few Americans would claim that sort of racial purity, even if they possessed it.>

<When you tell people that you're "English-American", they look at you like you're about 50% Nazi, LOL >

That's weird. Crazy Americans! I'm a dinkum blue blood, with excellent racial purity, though I do have some contamination from exogenous sources. I'm very proud of being white, [or whitish anyway]. I think I might even be prouder than black people are of being black.

One should be proud of ethnic origins because it makes one better than others, and who mated with whom over the past few centuries in one's ancestry is a matter of great pride - it shows a great ability to choose good parentage, and one should be proud of having excellent selection ability.

But not only that, I'm proud of being white because it means I've got the ability to avoid getting sunshine on my skin, which has a nasty habit of going brown, reducing my pride in being white, and also warning me that it could go melanomic, which is NOT something to be pleased about!

Melanin-rich ethnic people don't have to contend with that. Being brown is like cheating. Any fool can avoid melanoma with brown-enough skin. It's quite an achievement to stay white and unmelanomic. We white people should be really proud of surviving in a world full of ultraviolet light. White Pride, with a capital P, say I. Brown people just sit there, safe as houses [though some people think that houses are not all that safe these days, as investments anyway].

With everyone these days being proud of being Hispanic-American, Native-American, African-America, Irish-American and so on, I wonder if the old adage about pride coming before a fall is still relevant.
