I hate to say it, because I really like the fact that there is a muckraker in modern America like Michael Moore. It's something we need to keep the system honest. But, I do think he's a bit of an opportunist as you assert. There is certainly a market for his sort of film-making and he does his best to exploit it.

I'd have A LOT more repsect for Moore if he'd make an effort to live by the values that he advocates. It's great to make a mockery of the gluttony and avarice that encompasses the American psyche, that's what his films are all about. Showing the downside of this ultra-materialist egotisically driven society known as the United States. But, Moore, out of pure convience, lives his own little posh lifestyle in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His child attends private school. He loves getting dressed up in a tuxedo and sharing the spotlight.

If Moore was true to his word, he'd give a large portion of his after-tax earnings to charity (there are plenty of deserving charaties out there), and live a much less materialistic lifestyle. There are plenty of safe middle-class neighborhoods in New York City in which Moore could live a modest life that upholds his values, be a part of the overall community, and work to improve it. Unfortunately, Moore chooses not to walk the walk and opens himself up to legitimate criticisms from rightwingers who see the obvious hypocracy of his lifestyle in contrast to the anti-greed message he conveys in his movies.
