"However, I still do not expect Cheney to be jettisoned. The only thing that would keep him off the ballot would be a recurrence of his heart problems. Then it would be easy to accomplish an honorable switch at the top."

I dont expect it either Andrew, however cheney carrys so much negative political baggage and is the focus of much of the distrust and hatred by both the left and many independents, that there is a possiblity it may occur. The question was always who could replace him. I speculated on this months ago with both Rudy and Ridge mentioned as possiblities. But now Kerry sets the table for bush with his frantic efforts to enlist McCain. While this wooing was going on it is possible that McCain went to bush pointed out bushes vulnerablilties and cheneys unpopularity and struck a deal. I would think that if this did happen, there would be no announcement of this until after kerry picks some loser like gephart. Kerry/Gephart against Bush/McCain... Also re health: Cheney can always withdraw due to health and general family concerns without there being a health crisis. What i love about this scenario is the look that will be on the faces of kerry, kennedy, mcaullife and co? John M. would get so sick and I would feel so bad that i would have to make the drive to North Jersey to bring him some chicken soup. Mike
