I think this Harris poll is firmer than the LA Times one. But they are still all "Jello."

New Poll Has Bush With Double Digit Lead

A new Harris poll has Bush with a double digit lead over Kerry among likely voters. I know it is early and doesn't mean much, but isn't it still better to be up than down? The headline of the story asks if the rise is due to the Reagan effect. That couldn't have hurt, but remember several other things happened in the past few weeks that were really good for Bush. Great job figures came out, new Iraqi leaders were chosen and Bush got a unanimous UN resolution on Iraq, he attended the G-8 summit and got photo ops with Chirac and others, then he gave a moving eulogy at Reagan's funeral that was covered live.

It will be interesting to see the next batch of polls to find out whether the public believed the misleading NYT version of the 9/11 staff report or the actual content of the report as affirmed by the chairmen, whether or not news of Putin's statement about Iraq's planned terrorist attacks (which was under reported partially due to the Paul Johnson killing) got through to the public, and to see the reaction of the public to the Johnson killing and continued violence in Iraq. These are all stories that could either move the public to or away from Bush. Fasten your seatbelts -- it will be this way from now until November.
