The deficits started before the war started. In any case, there are ways of dealing with large deficits. Increase taxes and/or cut spending. Apparently, the Repubs don't have the balls to do either. The war is no excuse for running record deficits.

Yes, the Republicans have expanded the federal beauracracy. Who was in control of both the House, Senate and White House when the biggest exapansion of federal beauracry took place? I'll give you a hint, it's a party that start with the letter R. Stop ignoring reality. You can honestly say the federal beauracy hasn't grown under Bush with this whole new vast Homeland Security Dept?

The concept of "enemy combatants" and the different treatment they receive as well as the deference shown to the Executive's designation of individuals as such does not originate with Bush and is a part of US jurisprudence....

Well, perhaps that's true. But, why should Jose Padilla have his Constitutional rights disregarded? He was not in a foreign land taking up arms against the United States in the traditional sense of an "enemy combatant". The government needs to prove their case. He has due process rights under the Constitution that are being violated. Why just him and is he being held for held two years with no formal charges?!? This is not America! He has a right to a speedy trial by a jury of his peers in accordance with the Constitution. Bush is abusing the enemy combatant power. It's gotten to the point where if they tried him and he won, the government would have major egg on their face. This is exactly why the founding fathers forged the Bill of Rights to prevent such abuses.

The torture at Abu Gharib would have never happened if people at the top of the adminstration were on top of things in Iraq. If nothing else, it's a major PR problem for the U.S. who is supposedly in Iraq to end this sort of nonsense and trying to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqis. Bad management of the war from Washington to allow such abuse to take place in the first place. More likely they condoned it as it was a useful tool for obtaining informaiton and are no trying to save face.
