OT - Hi Glen, thank you for the response - my father was in similar situation as was one of my mother cousins - they were in forced labor camps which were "liberated" by the Red Army and continued to be in forced labor camps under the Russian until there was some unrest and protest and they were released, well after the war ended in those parts of the world. One more comment about the "gratitude" of the Red Army and Stalin was the uprising of the Poles in Warsaw - the Red Army just stood by at a time about 5 to 10 miles from them the German forces were decimating and destroying the city - more so those who escaped and hoped to find shelter across the Russian lines were murdered by the Russian Secret Police or deported to forced work camps in Siberia - for "reorientation" During the Warsaw uprising Stalin did not even let US or British bombers use Russian airspace to help the Poles or drop food and ammunitions to enable them to fight at a time Stalin was receiving handouts from the US. I think Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the unscrupulous man that went along with Stalin and for his inaction and fear of Stalin we had the Cold War – as Roosevelt action were interpreted as a weakness of the US in general and the sensitivity to take casualties in particular - by the then ruling gang under Stalin in Russia. In some way it is strange that history has not done justice in this respect. Would Roosevelt act in the long range US interests we would not have had the Korean War and possible not even Vietnam War – not to mention a Democratic Poland and neighboring countries with no “Iron Curtain” and “Cold War” warsawuprising.com Warsaw could have been the first European capital liberated; however, various military and political miscalculations, as well as global politics — played among Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Moreover, for the last several days before the start of the Uprising, large German units were retreating westwards through Warsaw. After the Soviets finally reached the right bank of Vistula on September 10, the officers proposed recreating the pre-war 36th 'Academic Legion' infantry regiment, however they were all arrested by the NKVD and sent to Russia for interrogation.
