Michal,

When I see pics that I like in a photo magazine that are from a book, I'll order the book online without looking at it. If the book has historical importance or if the photos have historical importance, I'll order it without browsing through it. I do indeed use reviews to decide whether to order a book, but it's because of what the review tells me about the content of the book rather than the quality.

As an example, you mentioned the tonal range of Sudek's photos. For the vast majority of us who haven't seen his prints, we wouldn't know if a book has reproduced them poorly or inaccurately. So, there is a point at which the quality of the book (paper, tonal range, etc.) that I truly don't know how good it is because I don't know how close to the original it is.
