I heartily second the use of a 2nd hard drive. I regularly make a complete copy of C: onto D: which is the 2nd hard drive installed in my machine. I am using W98SE so this works. Don't know what folks with XP do to make a complete backup to a 2nd hard drive. It will be a long time before I upgrade to XP I fear.

Anyway, my BIOS allows selection of boot drive so I can easily boot from D: to make sure the backup copy does in fact work.

The 2nd hard drive was first partitioned and formatted as a C: drive with the system installed so that this drive would boot. Then, it was attached to the cable from the 2nd IDE port. I use XXCOPY with a batch file to make the backup of all files on C: to D: -- after first doing a quick format of D: while in a DOS box. By cleaning D: prior to backing up C: to D: I don't keep adding file on file on top of something previously deleted on C:. The entire routine almost takes more time to describe than to initiate. Of course, a file by file copy of 20 GB of material on C: does take a few minutes. But, I sleep well at night.

Another touch is to put the 2nd hard drive in a removable hard drive swap rack holder. I can remove this 2nd hard drive and easily install a different drive in that bay. So, I routinely keep two backups up-to-date. You never know when a hard drive will quit working. I know. I spent 15 years as a network and LAN administrator and usually replaced about one hard drive per month out of 100 machines under my care.
