To underscore your point, I saw the daguerreotype survey exhibit last year and got the catalog on CD-ROM ! Even so, the digital images cannot keep pace with the amazing resolution of the 160 year old originals.

After several trips over time to look at Michal's eyemodule images, I'm wondering if he hasn't already "published" them using the most appropriate media? Of course, it is not unusual for printed media to degrade images...many of my photography books just make me long to see the originals. What would be unusual is that if Michal does publish these to paper, any viewer could still get an exact copy of the original with just a few clicks....
