(PR NEWSWIRE) SAFLINK Corp. Announces Security Deployment at U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense SAFLINK Corp. Announces Security Deployment at U.S. Office of the Secretary of D fense OSD Comptroller's Office Orders Software, Hardware, and Services BELLEVUE, Wash., June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SAFLINK(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: SFLK), a leading developer, marketer, and integrator of biometric security solutions, announced today that the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense Comptroller's Office (OSDCO) has placed an order with SAFLINK for security software, hardware, and services for more than 250 users as part of an initial deployment. "We needed a system that would be compatible with a broad variety of systems and access points, since our office needs to interface with multiple operating systems," said Clarence Hoop, Information Services Security Manager at OSDCO. "We work with many groups within the DoD, including the armed forces, and authorize expenditures of more than $400 billion a year. SAFLINK's architecture offers us security which is interoperable with these systems, standards-compliant, and supports a large variety of authentication devices. They have also provided excellent implementation support." The OSD Comptroller's Office is responsible for reviewing and approving all of the budgetary expenditures of the Department of Defense (DoD). Since these expenditures include operations critical to national security, much of the data that outlines details of the operations is classified. Currently, the authentication component of OSD's smart card-based security is limited to passwords or PINS. "We need increased security for all of the groups within the DoD, not just the OSD," said Hoop. "We would support adoption of this solution department-wide, because it would be flexible enough to accommodate the complexity of its disparate systems -- a critical component of a broad enrollment." The deployment follows a successful pilot at the Comptroller's office and will employ SAFLINK's SAFmodule(TM) software solution and SecuGen(R) Optimouse(TM) fingerprint readers. The solution is intended to provide a significant improvement in network security by eliminating passwords and PINS and replacing them with fingerprint scans, a much more secure means of verifying a user's identity. "The DoD is very proactive about testing the security of our existing systems," said Hoop. "We have found that our systems -- which currently rely on passwords or PINS for authentication -- are not adequately protected, because even strong passwords can be cracked in a matter of hours. They can also be borrowed, lost, or stolen." Hoop continued, "Since it is not practical to ask users to change passwords every hour to protect our network and data assets, we needed a solution that would be difficult to crack and is also convenient for users. Biometrics is the answer, because authentication is based on a user's unique individual characteristic, which is more convenient for users and much more secure." In addition to increased security, Hoop said that OSD selected SAFLINK's technology because of its fit with the OSDCO requirements.
