Gazprom is in favor of ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, Bogdan Budzulyak, a member of the Gazprom Executive Board, told RBC. According to Budzulyak, the ratification of this document will allow Russia to work out mechanisms for attracting investments in the modernization and development of its gas transportation system. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 during international summit talks under the aegis of the UN. The protocol will not come into force before it is ratified by countries whose total proportion of the global volume of emissions is at least 55 percent. The USA, whose proportion is 24 percent, gave up their obligations with regard to the protocol in 2001, as in the American opinion, the protocol cannot be implemented without reducing industrial production in the country. The ratification of the protocol in Russia has so far been delayed. |
