Maurice:You are right. We are a nation of blunderers.
The United States, from early 1942 through 1946, blundered about in the South Pacific and managed to bring to heel that highly sophisticated war machine known as Imperial Japan.
Then we blundered about during the occupation of that benighted country long enough to get democracy up and running--not to mention the restoration of its economic supremacy.
Next, we had to blunder about on the Korean Peninsula long enough to establish a democracy south of the 38th parallel. We also had to blunder about and figure out how to contain North Korea, particularly after MacArthur lured the Chinese in to bail out its buffer state north of the 38th.
Then we had to learn to live with the Chinese during the past 50 years of its economic and political ascendancy in the Far East and the world.
Meanwhile, we had to blunder about in Europe, also, inconveniently, while we were blundering about in Asia, in order to contain and then defeat that highly respected world class warrior known as Adolph Hitler.
After we blundered our way to success, we had to figure out what we meant by the Marshall Plan so that we could blunder our way along while helping Europe repair the devastation to its domain, a devastation caused by our blundering.
And if that was not enough, we had to blunder our way into the cold war, the Berlin wall, Stalinist Russia, the Communist buffer states, along with a few petty tribal wars in Africa and the islands and nations to our immediate South.
And if that was not enough to fill our plate, we found ourselves blundering our way in Bosnia, in Grenada, in Haiti, in Afghanistan.
And now we are blundering our way in Iraq as we bring a glimpse of freedom and democracy to that land that has never known anything but the enlightened rule of the likes of Saddam Hussein.
Yes, I suspect you are right, Maurice. The USA is under the domination of a Rabid Republican Right, all of whom have never learned not to blunder. If they would only learn that lesson: not to go out into the big wide world and blunder. Look what blundering has done for us. Look at how blundering has hindered our development. Look how the USA blundering has caused such misery and suffering all over the globe.
But, since we are the only remaining (BLUNDERING) superpower, I guess it really does mean that we never have to say were are sorry.
You said it right Maurice. What a nation of blunderers we are.
And President Bush will simply not say I am sorry. That's what wrong with him. He can't say: I'm sorry. |
