You're wrong, Bush Sr. did not "wipe the floor with Dukakis". In fact, Bush came from way behind to beat Dukakis. 3-4 months before the election Dukakis was way out front, I think 15% ahead of Bush.

Forrest Gump had a very profound influence on the national psyche that summer because is took us on a recent history tour from its own point of view and Forrest represented the average rural White Joe spirit. The film was very negative toward Vietnam era liberals which I gues Dukakis could be associated with. Some sleazy hippy type stole Meg Ryan from him and got her hooked on heroin. When 40 million people see that it makes a difference. It gets into the mass consciousness just the way Abu Graib or Reagan's death might.
