MRV First to Offer VPLS Auto-Discovery Services in IP/MPLS Access/Edge Routers Company Demonstrates Interoperability in SUPERDemo at SUPERCOMM 2004 6/22/2004 9:07:00 AM
CHICAGO, SUPERCOMM 2004, Jun 22, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (MRVC), a leading provider of Optical Ethernet Access solutions, today announced new virtual private LAN services (VPLS) auto-discovery capabilities for its OSM MPLS routers that makes it possible for enterprises and service providers to provision VPLS at the edge of the network.
VPLS works to create multipoint-to-multipoint virtual private networks (VPNs) across IP networks that use multiprotocol label switching (MPLS)-based routing. MPLS is presently gaining success in today's tight business climate where decentralized, geographically separate enterprise networks need simple, flexible and cohesive broadband solutions to be unified into one distributed network.
The new auto-discovery features, combined with the robust subscriber management capability of the OSM access/edge router, simplify the provisioning of VPLS services by enabling the OSM to automatically signal its services to other MPLS devices. Previously, service providers had to manually set up these services using network management. The unique auto-discovery feature, based on the current IETF draft, makes the creation of advanced multipoint VPNs easier and faster than ever. This is accomplished by simplifying VPN membership allocation, as well as the provisioning of new VPLS features, and the addition of new sites to the network.
"MRV is the first vendor in the world to offer VPLS auto-discovery through our OSM access/edge product platform." said Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications, Inc. "The VPLS auto-discovery feature allows our carrier customers to lower their costs of deployment and maximize profits with E-Line and E-LAN services. Participating in the MPLS forum facilitates testing our interoperability with other equipment vendors in Ethernet services. MRV has a long history of providing Optical Ethernet Access solutions to some of the world's largest metro networks."
MRV's MPLS solutions are already at work in carrier networks on four continents. The OSM with VPLS functionality has been installed in FiberCity, the largest alternate carrier in the Philippines. FiberCity is launching large-scale business services such as multi-site connectivity, and Intranet services that provide connectivity between different sites of the same organization. FiberCity also provides Extranet services for connectivity between company sites and their customers, as well as video-conferencing, storage and voice services.
MRV's OSM family of carrier-class Ethernet Access products are based on a flexible architecture capable of adapting future services and standards within the same platform. The OSM series, designed as intelligent access/edge routers for IP/MPLS networks, can be used as demarcation devices for E-LAN services or as the provider's edge equipment. The OSM's VPLS capability complements MRV's comprehensive range of Optical Ethernet Access solutions, and provides carriers with efficient ways to implement next generation services.
Interoperability at SUPERCOMM 2004
MRV's OSM Solution is a part of the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance SUPERDemo during the show.
Gary Leonard of Riverstone Networks, and vice president of marketing for the MPLS Forum and Frame Relay Alliance, commented: -- "MRV Communications' joining the MPLS Forum and participating at the world's largest MPLS demo at SUPERCOMM 2004 shows its commitment to standards and interoperability in the service provider and enterprise markets. We are pleased to welcome MRV Communications into the select group of MPLS vendors in the carrier market."
The MPLS & Frame Relay Alliance SUPERDemo is a two-stage, multi-vendor interoperability event showcasing the flexibility of MPLS technology. The participants are engaged in a variety of scenarios to test the capabilities of hierarchical virtual private LAN service (H-VPLS), operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) capabilities of MPLS networks including label switched path (LSP) Ping, ATM-MPLS interworking and layer 2 (Martini/PWE3-based Ethernet, Frame Relay and ATM pseudowires) and Layer 3 VPNs.
The live demonstration can be viewed at the MPLS & Frame Relay Alliance booth #21439 -- Hall A at SUPERCOMM 2004 at Chicago's McCormick Place. The MPLS & Frame Relay Alliance is an international industry organization that is advancing the recognition and acceptance of MPLS and Frame Relay technologies in the global telecom industry.
