We have a bout 9-10 parties, three major ones, left-center-right, plus some additional stable smaller ones.(far left, green, religious, far right etc) Plus some even smaller ones, which usually do not last for many elections, at least not decades.
That is, the majority government is, or can be, formed by those who are somewhat moderate while the extreme ones cannot do much.
That is, the major parties do not have to "harbor the cuckoos", but they still have their own position to say whatever they say, sometimes they even come up with smart things. At least they keep an eye on the major parties.
Same thing with the three major parties, two can easily agree on some funny stuff, but with three, one of them can usually be trusted to bring it out into to the open.
The key thing is to have this moderate center-party, which can offset, neutralize, the extreme ones when the government is formed and decisions are made. |
