Tuesday June 22, 4:53 pm ET
Deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Technology Will Increase Data Speeds on the TNZ's Mobile Network - Already the Fastest in New Zealand - by Nearly 15 Times

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, June 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Telecom New Zealand (TNZ) today announced that it has selected Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) to deploy an enhanced third-generation (3G) mobile data network based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology. The deployment will increase data speeds on TNZ's mobile network -- already the fastest mobile data network in New Zealand -- by nearly 15 times, offering TNZ customers mobile data services at speeds rivaling the fastest wireline connections.

The 1xEV-DO network will enable TNZ to deliver a broad array of new entertainment and business services, including video messaging, the ability to download clips from films, music, sports or news, videoconferencing, Internet and intranet access, and many other new applications up to peak data speeds of 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps).

"We expanded our relationship with Lucent Technologies because they are a global leader in the deployment of 3G networks, and they will help us deliver these high-speed mobile services," said Kevin Kenrick, general manager of mobile services with TNZ. "As a world-leading wireless broadband technology, EV-DO will bring our customers benefits including a high quality network, faster downloads and better overall performance."

As part of the agreement, TNZ will upgrade its existing Lucent Flexent® CDMA2000 base stations with hardware and software to support the 1xEV-DO services. Lucent Worldwide Services -- which is already managing TNZ's CDMA2000 1X network under an agreement announced in June, 2003 -- will provide project management, network planning and design, installation, integration, testing and optimization services.

"This agreement builds on the long-standing collaboration between Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group, Lucent Worldwide Services and TNZ on the development and management of its CDMA2000 1X network," said Bart Vogel, managing director for Lucent Technologies in Australia and New Zealand. "We're pleased to be able to help TNZ take it's network to the next level -- the 1xEV-DO network will enable TNZ to offer both consumers and business customers a mobile data experience unrivalled in New Zealand."
