Ltd. has created a file system for the Linux operating system called Robust File System (RFS), which can be stored and operate from NAND flash, the company said Tuesday (June 22). Samsung's Linux NAND flash memory software allows the NAND flash memory to store code as well as data, and as a result, Samsung predicted, it should be possible to drop NOR flash memory from mobile telephone handsets. By eliminating the need for NOR flash memory and supporting the Linux operating system with a demand-paging function, Samsung can lower overall costs and reduce space requirements in mobile handhelds, the company said. The RFS also offers greater data preservation capabilities in case of power disruption and takes care of 'wear-leveling', which takes into account the limited endurance capability of flash memory and prevents particular memory cells being used repeatedly. To address the problem of data loss from corrupted file allocation tables (FAT), the software supports the use of a transactional FAT for external memory cards.
