ep, I'm not sure how it works in England but as a self employed I charge GST (our VAT) to customers but realise a credit from my own purchases which basically means only my profit is taxed plus the first 30 grand (not huge but helps many small part time businesses) id GST free...
I prefer a VAT style tax. The error the old (defunct) Conservative government in Canada made when instituting was watering it down and not replacing much more of the income tax code with it...
