Okay. How were human rights under those members of the Contras who ruled prior to the Sandanistas?

None of them ruled prior to the Sandinistas. The closest to ruling was probably Enrique Bermúdez who was formerly a colonel under Somoza. He was an important figure but he wasn't in charge. At that time human rights where not well respected. But Nicaragua was never ruled by Enrique Bermúdez or any of the other contras and the human rights situation in Nicaragua was bad before Somoza and during the Sandinistas reign as well.

Have you thought about the possibility that the Samoza rulers were not active members in the Contras because they were too old and probably didn't have any military training but nonetheless, were the power behind the Contras? I find it hard to believe that they simply vanished off the face of the earth after the Sandanistas took over.....at least the ones that weren't jailed.
