Internet Paradox Revisited
webuse.umd.edu

written by Kraut et al. and published in May of 2001

---notes---

-new paper acknowledges negative findings from 1998 article..
-follow-up study however shows that such findings seemed to have dissipated, w/ the exception of increased stress
-a new study even shows an opposite effect on social well-being for new computer buyers
-after using inet, extroverts w/ social support had better overall experience than introverts w/ comparably less social support; age is not found to be a big factor

as of y2k , pew reports 90% of daily inet users deal w/ email

positive social impact may depend on qualitative features of online relationship

opportunity cost: using internet for 'drive-by' interaction instead of more profound face to face discussion may result in negative social outcome

very little consensus among researchers regarding social impact of the internet .. seems to depend upon the individual ...

even if we agree that usage of the internet either encourages or discourages social engagement, it's possible to prove causation ( due to "cross-sectional nature of the research making it impossible to distinguish self-selection" ) IE..different people use the internet differently

socially 'rich get richer' theory : those whom already had an affinity towards social support systems were found to create an even more social livelihood after having used the internet .... introverted = opposite

conversely: idea of 'social compensation' for introverts suggests that those whom tend to focused internally are most likely to benefit from the many ways to interact socially via the internet

heavy internet use was shown to be directly proportinate to stress; and inversely proportionate to both local knowledge and a desire to stay in local area

"The Internet may be more beneficial to individuals to the extent that they can leverage its opportunities to enhance their everyday lives."

***from 95-98, the number of ppl w/ inet access quadrupled
***84% of the control group for the researchers (the one that was not to be given free inet access) actually went out and got their own ISP during the study
