The ribbentrop agreement was just a way to mutually delay the start of the fullblown WW2 Russia-Germany, giving both some additional time to prepare for it. Especially Russia needed time to reconstruct and organize their military which prooved itself not very functional in 1939. (However, legally it formed on important base for independency, borders,etc of the eastern nations)
