I think what people question, when Mel makes his religious movie (that he claims to believe in, in a way he does not believe in his secular movies) is that Jesus was clearly on the side of the poor. He was against the rich, and against the establishment- to make money off him, when he clearly would have been against making loads of money, is hypocrisy if one believes in Jesus. It isn't at all hypocritical if one doesn't believe in him- but to make money off Jesus, when you claim to believe in him, is like killing for Buddha, if you claim to follow that ideology- and it just doesn't fit with the expressed ideology of the J-man.
