I can't imagine why God would care whether I am materially successful or wear sackcloth.

The idea that material wealth is a sign of grace has been around for hundreds of years and was responsible for the rise of the merchant class.

In an open system of unlimited wealth maybe I could entertain it, but it is not an open system and wealth is always created at somebody else's expense.
