TEHRAN, June 23 (Xinhuanet) -- The promised release of the eightdetained British marines may be postponed to Thursday as thenegotiation between Iran and Britain lingers continues, Iran'sstate television reported on Wednesday evening.

The reason for the suspension is the way of handover, said thereport, adding the two sides are discussing whether the releasedmarines should be sent back to their camp in Iraq directly acrossthe Shatt al-Arab waterway, where they were detained, or be handedover to the British embassy in Tehran.

Iran on Monday seized three British naval boats and eightmarines aboard in the Shatt al-Arab waterway, accusing them ofentering Iranian territorial waters without permit.Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's state news channel reported that theIslamic Republic was to prosecute the detained British soldiers, but an Iranian Armed Forces officer said that the decision wouldnot be made until the investigation clarified their intention ofintrusion.

Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi previously announced that thedetained marines would be freed later on Wednesday because theinvestigation determined they had no aggressive intention. But theorder of release has not been carried out so far.

The incident came shortly after Britain, along with France andGermany, accused Iran of being less than fully cooperative with theInternational Atomic Energy Agency on the inspection of its nuclearprogram. Enditem
