Mark,

Re:<<This will force Microsoft to give away voice recognition with their suite and accelerate acceptance of the technology>>

PC Magazine's 9/9/97 issue's "Trends" page has some quotes from Dr. Nathan Myhrvold, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft.

On speech recognition, he says, "It's not ready for prime time, but one day it will be hughly sucessful. The problem with speech recognition is that 95 percent accuracy isn't good enough. I said 5 years ago that good products were still 5 years away, and today I'll say it again: Good products are still 5 years away. Even if they take 25 years they'll still be worth it, but I always say 5 years because anything longer sounds like infinity."

I don't think that Microsoft will let IBM's challange go unanswered. Perhaps Myhrvold's 200 scientists engaged in basic research will have to get their version ready for the market soon. It may not be perfect, but what is?

It's going to be very interesting to watch.

Barry
