Bishops have to face facts, do they believe killing a child by aborting the birth is sin. If so they should come out with a statement saying so. To be a Catholic is to be against abortion. I no longer follow the doings of the Catholic Church but I would be amazed if there were any bishop that was not perfectly clear that abortion is a sin and did not transmit that message to church membership. The issue is what to do as a politician when something is a sin but not a crime. There are lots and lots of things that are sins but not crimes. Countries, like Iran, where that is not the case, are called "theocracies." We do not have a theocracy. My Catholic days are way behind be but I don't ever recall it being a sin to not intervene when others are sinning. If so they would have a flock of buttinskis. Each of us is responsible for his own sins. If anything needs clarification by the bishops, it's what responsibility Catholic office holders have to deal with sinning among their constituents. I would submit that both dealing with sinning and clarification of the role of office holders are jobs for bishops.
